BROOME...... is the southern gateway town as you enter the amazing Kimberley region of
Outback Western Australia.

Established as a pearling port in the 1880s it attracted a diverse multiculture of personalities many hoping to make their fortunes from the pearling industry.
Today, though pearling (cultured) continues to be a major industry it is tourism that has set off an explosion of economic activity and population growth.

Broome's official tourist season is May through to the end of October but with a year round average tropical daily temperature of 31 degrees celsius, even the tropical summer - October through to April (hot high humidity spectacular thunderstorms) can also provide a unique tropical experience. The towns diversity of tourism services have grown to meet an all year round demand.

Working Holiday Makers are starting to find jobs in and around Broome all the year round - particularly in hospitality services.

However, employers usually require a minimum stay of between 2 and 6 months and finding suitable accommodation can be an issue.
Some employers can arrange accommodation.

If you are planning to work in Broome and you are in Perth or Darwin it is a very good idea to go around to the backpacker employment agencies because many of the bigger employers in Broome have permanent listings with agencies due to the high turnover of staff.

It will definately save you a lot of time and hassle if you can organise a job before you arrive in Broome however don't be put off as many smaller employers rely on adverts in the local hostels or working holiday backpackers knocking on their doors.

Staying at one of the several backpacker hostels when you first arrive in Broome is a good idea, but, once you've found your job, a hostel may not be financially or socially (work mode) viable.

One of the cheapest options may be a tent
(or if you have a 'travelling van') at the Roebuck Bay Caravan Park. They have a backpacker facility which might be called the 'animal park', which, as the name suggests, is basic, but, during peak season may be your only option.

The town of Broome (also called Chinatown) is located on a peninsular, with town on one side and the famous Cable Beach located
on the other side.

When you are in Broome you will refer to where places are as either being on the town side, or the beach side
(though there is also a 'town beach').

There are backpacker hostels, tourist hotels, resorts, restaurants, cafes, bars etc on both the town side and beach side of the peninsular.

For those of you who are in Broome without your own vehicle there is a bus service which links both sides of the peninsular. It travels between town and the beach through Broomes mini suburbia so if you are staying in accommodation on the town side but work on the beach side, then your o.k...... we think? Whew! how you going with this, still following?
